5 Championship Courses · Graeagle, CA
There are five championship golf courses in the Graeagle area of Northern California, all within 5–25 minutes of each other. Most groups play two to four courses over a weekend stay.
Graeagle sits at 4,300–5,400 feet in the Sierra Nevada — altitude adds carry distance, speeds up greens, and keeps temperatures cooler than Sacramento or the Bay Area even in summer. The five courses offer genuine variety: classic parkland, links-style ridgelines, tight pine corridors, and a championship layout with an FLW-designed clubhouse.

There are five championship golf courses in the Graeagle area of Northern California: Graeagle Meadows Golf Course, Whitehawk Ranch Golf Course, Plumas Pines Golf Resort, Grizzly Ranch Golf Club, and Nakoma (The Dragon) Golf Course. All five are within 5 to 25 minutes of each other, making Graeagle one of the most concentrated golf destinations in California.
Grizzly Ranch Golf Club holds the highest national ranking — Golf Digest Top 100 Greatest Public Courses in the US (2021). At 7,411 yards with a slope of 140, it is also the most difficult. Nakoma (The Dragon) is the most distinctive, with the only golf clubhouse in the world designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Whitehawk Ranch was ranked Top 20 Golf Courses in California in 1998. For value, Plumas Pines is rated a Top 5 Best Value course in the Sierra Nevada.
Graeagle Meadows Golf Course is the most accessible. Opened in 1968 and designed by Ellis Van Gorder, it plays to par 72 at 6,759 yards with a slope of 120 — the lowest of the five courses. The open meadow design and generous fairways make it well-suited for higher-handicap golfers and mixed groups.
Graeagle Meadows, Whitehawk Ranch, and Plumas Pines are fully open to public play. Nakoma (The Dragon) is accessible through resort stays or golf packages. Grizzly Ranch is semi-private — access is typically arranged through a package. GolfGraeagle coordinates tee times at all five courses as part of stay-and-play packages.
Most Graeagle courses open between late April and mid-May, depending on snowpack and weather. Grizzly Ranch and Nakoma, at higher elevations, often open slightly later. The season typically runs through October or early November. GolfGraeagle confirms current opening dates at time of booking.
Graeagle is approximately 45 to 55 minutes north of Truckee and North Lake Tahoe via Highway 89. It is a realistic day-trip from Tahoe, but most golfers stay in Graeagle itself to play multiple courses over a weekend without backtracking.
