Mohawk Valley meadows, streams, and towering Sierra pines
Whitehawk Ranch opened in 1996 on 550 acres of Mohawk Valley land, designed by Dick Bailey to use every natural feature the site offered. Four major awards followed: Golf Digest Top 20 in California, GolfWeek #10 Best Course You Can Play in California, Golfer's Choice #9 in California (2021), and the California Golf Writers Environmental Award. Twelve holes play through open meadows along Sulphur Creek; six climb into forested hillside terrain. Water features, native wildflowers, and an all-grass driving range with complimentary balls round out one of the best public golf experiences in Northern California.
12 meadow holes + 6 forested hillside holes
Streams, ponds, and waterfalls throughout
Native grasses, California poppies, blue lupine
A drivable par 4 measuring 238–310 yards depending on tees. A stream crosses the fairway diagonally from left to right, then runs along the right side of the green. The risk-reward calculus is clear from the tee — clear the stream and you have a makeable birdie; miss right and you are in the water. The most talked-about decision on the course.
Plays back through the meadow with Sulphur Creek running the length of the left side. The final approach requires a precise carry over water to a green framed by the Sierra peaks — a finishing hole that demands everything.
Mid-to-low handicap players who want a serious test with serious scenery. The group consensus pick — consistently rated the most enjoyable round of a Graeagle trip.
Golfers who struggle with water — Sulphur Creek and multiple ponds come into play on several holes. High-handicappers will lose balls and patience on the meadow holes.
The day-two anchor. After an arrival round at Graeagle Meadows, Whitehawk is the course everyone looks forward to — varied terrain, great conditions, and the all-grass range for a proper warm-up.
