Best Golf Courses in Northern California Mountains

By GolfGraeagle.com · March 2026 · 7 min read · Ranked by accolades and course quality

The best mountain golf in Northern California is concentrated in one valley: Graeagle, in Plumas County, at 3,500–5,000 feet elevation. Five championship courses within 25 minutes of each other — including Golf Digest Top 100, Golf World Top 75, and the only Frank Lloyd Wright golf clubhouse in the world. Here they are, ranked honestly.

Why Graeagle Is Northern California's Mountain Golf Capital

No other location in Northern California's mountain zone puts five nationally ranked courses within a 25-minute drive of each other. Tahoe has excellent golf spread across a 40-mile corridor. Truckee has a cluster of good courses. Graeagle has five championship courses in one compact valley — all operating May through October, all within 5–25 minutes of each other.

The elevation advantage is real: at 3,500–5,000 feet, golf balls carry 6–8% farther than at sea level. A 150-yard approach at Graeagle elevation is closer to a 160-yard carry. Factor this into every club selection.
